The changes occur in our body affecting our physical health.|
though a large number of Indians are living healthy beyond age 75, 80 years and
even up to 99 years of age, a large section of the community are affected by disorders
like Obesity, Diabetes, Hypertension and Strokes. Many call it a day even in their
forties due to unexpected heart attacks or get incapacitated for life. This type
of occurrence is common for both men and women and needs to be checked. You may
feel like asking, in the absence of any specific illness from birth, why such
afflictions become common. These diseases cannot be cured by medication. Injections
of Insulin can at most control the level of blood sugar but does not cure the
disease or control its side-effects. You might have heard the statements with
pride that India is a young nation with more than 65% of the population in the
age group of 25 years to 40 years. But in this statistics, sadly, we forget to
understand that this happens because 35% of the population does not live beyond
the age of 45 years. How many of your young friends had a sudden death? In a similar
way, arterial blocks can be removed by specific surgical procedures. But the infirmity
continues and may recur at a different or even same location! Hence, it is wiser
to prevent the first occurrence itself.
data reveal that almost three out of ten people affected by heart attack will
not be able to reach the hospital in time. Even those who are able to get a successful
operation done will need continuous medical care for the rest of their lives.
Coronary artery blocks start building up even at a young age but unfortunately
the incidence of the block is felt only after more than sixty percent of the artery
gets blocked. Hence this requires attention even long before the attack occurs.
In the early years of youth, during teen ages and in the 20's, one needs large
amount of food Calories to meet the growth requirements of the body. But when
the development is complete around the early thirties, the intake requires to
be reduced for maintenance only and the Caloric needs have to be reduced substantially
from the 2500 required earlier. Similarly, the hard working adults will need to
change the eating habits when the situation changes to a management job or sedentary
work. The consumption of butter, oil, ghee, salt, sugar and other carbohydrates
needs to be cut to prevent the onset of the Metabolic Disorders, as they are called.
Absence of such strict regimen makes many of us suffer from life-long debilities
and even meet the end early, even before the fifties. The adage "Prevention
is better than cure" is most apt in such circumstances.
What is the necessity for changes in our living style?
style needs changes - but why? The diseases already enumerated cannot be cured
with medicines. They can only be kept under control. But, their effects on the
body remain. In families where there is a history of other members affected by
one or more of these illnesses, it is essential that the younger generation in
the age group of thirties and above should have their vital parameters like BP,
Sugar, cholesterol checked periodically and follow the life style changes required.
An important part of this is that they impose dietary restrictions on themselves
in good time. Many of us have read about the dietary values of different food
items like rice, oil, proteins etc. Excess consumption of any of these items would
result in the body metabolism converting them into another form and store them.
For example excess carbohydrates would result in their conversion to fat stores
in the abdominal region for future use!! One should remember some of the age-old
habits like regular physical exercises to avoid such unwanted results. Alongside
a number of mental exercises like meditation also need to be followed. Workouts
like Surya Namaskar, Yoga and Pranayama explained in our ancient scriptures are
to be regularly practiced. It is ironical that Western civilization has recognized
the merit of these practices while our own people are ignorant of it. No wonder
it is a true and accepted fact that the spiritual philosophy and practices enunciated
in our ancient literature are to be rigorously followed in our daily activities
Failings in the areas of psychological make-up.
advancements in the life style over the past few decades have actually affected
the mental peace of many. There is significant increase in the economic status
of the nation of India as well as among members of the Indian community in India
and around the world. Everyone has a materialistic ideation and competes in status
with another person around them. This leads to significant pressures on individuals
and the families. Vision and dreams are good but greed and jealously takes that
place. Psychological disorders are more prevalent in the Indian youth. The educated
class in India are now joining the rat race of higher foreign education, and acquiring
more wealth through higher salaries etc. Many parents often apply too-much pressure
on their children to excel in education. This has led to psychological disorders
like Mental Depression, Anxiety, and Low self-esteem among the youth leading to
family break-ups and suicidal tendencies. But unfortunately many parents fail
to recognize this early. Exposure to different racial cultures, habits and practices
leads to a lack of proper assimilation of the values and the spiritual development
of the mind, leading to mental disorders.
