PART - 06: RIGHTEOUS THOUGHTS AND STRENGTH OF MIND

06.01: Let us deliberate on what is peace of mind and body.

While the ailments of this bag of flesh and bones can be set right to some extent by desirable habits and customs, mental upsets can lead to various types of illnesses. The vicissitudes required in our psychic and spiritual bearings due to the swing in our life style have to be carefully considered. Some mental aberrations could be there from birth itself. They have to be diagnosed as early as possible and quickly managed with medical treatments, if necessary, and follow proper paths as essential lifestyle changes. It is essential to avoid unnatural longing for things against nature. Every effort should be made to avoid any desire or plans that are against the natural laws or proper lifestyle. Passion and greed often leads to suffering of the mind and body.

06.02: Some wrong apprehensions about mental state.

Most people have significant mental strength to support themselves even in distress. It has been observed that school students of both genders who are otherwise healthy physically, may develop psychic problems early in life leading to unhappy families. This will in turn cause mental agony to their elders. Expecting students to be voracious bookworms is not desirable. At that young age students should have diversions like sports and physical exercise. Also, other activities like music and painting are needed for proper mental development. In a similar way, students who are averse to games like tennis or cultural activities like classical dance or music should not be forced into them. Some parents take it as a major lifetime project of child-rearing by going after their activities and studies all the time. Parents should not have their conjugal happiness wrecked under the guise of having a close watch over their kids' activities like study, games, dance or other recreations. In many instances this could lead to unhappy family.

In some cases there could be mental imbalances from childhood itself. Some may have specific personality disorders or mental diseases. No one can point a finger in such circumstances. Such psychological problems and defects should be looked for at an early stage itself and appropriate psychiatric medical care must be given. There can be no self-denial that "such mental problems do not run in our family" and hide oneself from the consequences of some mental illness. Early diagnosis and treatment is important.

06.03: "Expectations beyond Reality" are the prime cause sufferings.

Many of our age-old practices and Hindu philosophy have helped Indians in having a balanced mind and spiritual discipline resulting in healthy body and mental wellness. One should do one's own duty without any anticipation about the result. Most parents desire that their progeny should study hard and get high marks in their examinations. It is good to have proper vision to plan a bright future and also work on it. But it cannot go beyond a limit to become a greedy desire and an obsession. They can help in this process to some extent; but this is definitely not by abusing them or by comparing them with others which would lead to their becoming diffident about their own capabilities and loss of self-esteem. One should not start criticizing and scolding the children in the name of being a strict disciplinarian. This would have the undesirable consequence of the children fostering mental depression and develop suicidal thoughts.

When we imbed a rose plant in our garden, it is our duty to water the plant regularly. But we cannot expect the shrub should give flowers as and when we want or give flowers of a particular hue that we fancy for. We should not assume that the plant should give us only red roses while what we had planted was a yellow or white rose! Similarly one cannot expect to get a mango from a lily plant. We should realize that there is a superior force which decides on our desires and plans. Having abnormal wants is against nature and would become "Expectations beyond Reality". We must perform our duties properly without looking too much of its outcome. Our scriptures specifically instruct us in this to perform the work assigned and leave the outcomes to the power above us. Faith is important in this. Even though we are all aware of this, many of us fail to follow this principle, especially in family matters. There is strong intent to make all others carry out our own plans. This often leads to mental and physical distress over a period of time.

All of us have responsibility for doing our duty only (karma). What is done should be congruous and be for the welfare of all. To develop this type of discipline and foster mental peace, religious practices like intoning devotional songs, meditation and performing yoga-asana become important. Such activities help in controlling maladies like hypertension, also. We are accountable for engaging in our profession. There is a power above occupying the driver's seat to decide on the consequences of our actions. Realization of this will give us freedom from mental torments. Setting apart, every day, a little time for daily devotional prayers, meditation, yoga and asana will be a good lifestyle to follow. Service to the community will get us the blessings of elders and Divine Grace as well and also give us the desired feeling of goodness and peace of mind.
